My translation of Charny's Questions are posted here so that other scholars can comment. I am particularly interested in references to other discussions of the legal problems raised by Charny. In other words, if someone in the Late Middle Ages provided an answer to a question similar to one of Charny's, I would be very glad to hear about it. The translation is (c) Steven Muhlberger 2011. I reserve the right to use any material posted on this site.

W 46
46. Charny asks: Men at arms leave a place to ride against their enemies and when they are in the field they promise each other to collect booty in common and share it out. So they ride out and fight and defeat their enemies and gain horses, harness, and money and plenty of other goods, and a large number of good prisoners. And when it comes to share booty, each brings his gains except for the prisoners. So many demand that the prisoners should go into the common booty; and others say no. How should it be judged by the law of arms?
